Annual Council meeting (Part 1)
14 May 2026
On Thursday 14 May I attended Part 1 of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Annual Council meeting. This is the ceremonial part of the annual meeting, before the council’s committee and appointments business is dealt with at Part 2.
Mayor and Deputy Mayor
- Councillor Jacky Tustain was elected Mayor for 2026/27
- Councillor Sajish Tom was elected Deputy Mayor for 2026/27
The council also thanked Councillor Colin Phillimore on the conclusion of his year as Mayor.
Mayor’s priorities for the year
Mayor Tustain set out her priorities for the year ahead, with wellbeing as the central theme – including reducing loneliness, supporting mental and physical health, and strengthening community connections. She also outlined plans for a Mayoral Community Chest, working with Basingstoke Voluntary Action to support local charities.
Community awards
A number of community, business and youth awards were presented during the meeting, recognising residents and organisations who contribute across the borough.
You can read the official minutes on the council website when they are published.
Part 2 of the Annual Council meeting took place on 21 May. Read my update on Part 2.
